To respond to these challenges and increase their revenue, CSPs must create new...

This is a "console" verification of the tool-assisted speedrun of The Adventures of Captain Comic Revision 1 in 6:30:977 . The laptop is running FreeDOS 1.3 RC4 on bare metal. Connected to the laptop is an Arduino Leonardo , which is capable of acting as a USB keyboard. The Arduino is programmed to play back the sequence of keypresses from the original emulator movie file (slightly edited for sync purposes and to cut out the boot sequence). One must boot the computer manually, then...

Screen recording and narration of the process of making a Git branch and a pull request. The result was pull request #1270 . I fast-forwarded (purple tint) some parts not directly related to the topic, such as when I went looking for better scan references to put in the commit messages. I accidentally swapped the scan references in the pull request message during the video. I later edited the message in the pull request.

In 2018, SCIT returned both to Plautus and to a (gently) historical setting with a Space Western adaptation of the Menaechmi . Twins Menaechmus and Menaechmus were separated long ago, one ending up on earth while the other searched the galaxy for his missing brother with his trusty companion Messenioid. Mistaken identities, handsome neighborhood madams, and voluminous pantaloons ensue! The Good, The Bad, and the Menaechmi was directed by Brandon Bark and performed at the Eliott Program Center...

Men's Rites: An Alt-Comedy performed by Stanford Classics in Theater May 12 and 13, 2017 at the Elliott Program Center. SCIT's 2017 production was a gender-flipped version of Aristophanes' Thesmophoriazusae , directed by Stephen Sansom and Ava Shirazi. Instead of Euripides invading a women's festival, our production saw the notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg infiltrating a motley crew of MRAs. The video recording is likely of the May 12 performance. The Republican Party in Pieces: A Comedy (in Fragments) , performed by Stanford Classics in Theater May 13 and 14, 2016. In 2016 SCIT experimented with a series of interconnected one-act plays based on fragments of Old Comedy: Aristophanes' Banqueters , Cratinus' Wine Flask , and Eupolis' Demes . The show as a whole was set at the Republican National Convention, which, in the heated and divisive run-up to the 2016 election, seemed a magnet for fragmentation in all its senses. The production...

In 2014 SCIT produced its first—and, to date, only—Latin play, Plautus' Casina . The production, directed by Oren Stevens and produced by Sienna Kang, Alan Sheppard, and Ava Shirazi, also marked a departure from our hyper-modern political satires in that it was set in late-nineteenth century San Francisco, the Gilded Age or railway tycoons and university founding. The original production took place May 1–3 in Stanford's Toyon Hall, and was revived on October 24 at the Marines' Memorial...

After a suggestion from Kabuto , I work in a 19-tick faster deathwarp in CASTLE0. This involves writing a "split" program that converts a .jrsr movie file into a list of keyboard inputs per game tick, and a replay.lua script that can read such a list and play it back in the emulator, aligned with the game clock. I also take advantage of the replay script to clean up some movement. Meanwhile, I write a program to lay out the stages spatially and draw a chosen path through them. The...

Tool-assisted speedrun of The Adventures of Captain Comic Revision 1 for DOS. The route was found by computer optimization. This TAS improves over the 6:33.075 run by using a velocity underflow glitch to escape the castle 19 ticks faster. See the TASVideos thread for more information. The time of 6:30.977 is the time from power-on to final input. The RTA time, from first movement (tick 0 at 12.657 s) to the end of the beam-out animation (tick 3494 at 396.469 s), would be 6:23.81. I TAS through CAVE, BASE, and the end of the game. One the way, I find a minor bug in the route: the transitions cave0_door1→cave0_door0→lake2_door0 did not take into account that it takes 1 tick to turn around to face right. I also find a way to end input 6 ticks earlier, by buffering a jump input after starting a teleport. Then I spend some time learning about options for encoding the video. Watch out for loud game audio starting at about 3:05:00. I postprocessed the audio with a...

Just after finishing the last video , I found ways to reduce the cost of the death in CAVE1 from 92 ticks to 88 ticks. I spend some time trying to reduce it further, by briefly delaying, or by shooting enemies, in CAVE0. I find a couple of options that are 1 or 5 ticks faster getting up to the door while taking 2 damage, but none that finishes with en_pos = 0, which is even more important going into CAVE1. Then I measure some edges in the Boots route , only enough to convince the optimizer...

I try other options for the death in CAVE1, and find one that takes only 92 ticks, compared to the one of cost 131 that I found before. Then I audit the logic graph, reimplementing the whole thing using matrix-like notation. The audit finds and fixes a few small logic bugs: There were connections missing between {base0_door0, base0_door1} and {base0_rb}, requiring the Wand. base2_lb cannot reach base2_door1 directly using only a hover; the item remains a bottleneck unless you have the Wand. It...

In the first 1:46:00, I work on making states more precise with respect to left-teleports. The problem is that while you can spend all your teleport budget going from point A to point B, or going from point B to point C, you cannot do both on the way from point A to point C. I try adding "number of left-teleports remaining" to the state, itself not a fully precise representation, before giving up on the idea as too complicated. I measure the costs of the remaining state...

I measure the costs through CAVE and picking up the Teleport Wand, with the exception of the deliberate death in CAVE1, which I want to try optimizing using a script. The total path cost stood at 3286 ticks when I started this video. It crept upward as I added measured costs. As soon as the total cost reached 3350, the optimizer's route suddenly flipped, now wanting to visit BASE and collect the Boots before entering CAVE, with a new route with a total inferred cost of 3349. The source code is...

I start by writing a Lua script to do what I could not in the previous session . The script finds an input schedule that hovers through the right side of LAKE2 without bonking. In this video, I adjust the CASTLE state transition costs to make one transition in the roundtrip to get the Crown as tight as possible. I make a few code-quality improvements, and partially account for the possibility of ending input early by making the inferred cost of a transition into a winning state be zero. Then I measure the costs between FOREST0 and LAKE2, and stop when I am unexpectedly unable to find a way to hover across LAKE2 without bonking. The source code is in a repo that uses...

This video is devoted to optimizing CASTLE0 and collecting the Crown. The process involves an initial intentional death to gain hover, then a hover into the chamber containing the Crown, then another intentional deathwarp back down to the door. Because the quickest way to die in this area is to take damage from enemies, the whole process is bottlenecked on enemy spawns rather than Comic's movement. The first death is pretty easy. Just make sure Comic has 0 HP on entering the stage, and en_pos...

I fix a bug in the infer_transition_cost function. The left-teleport speed increase was wrongly being ascribed to the Boots, not the Teleport Wand. Fixing this bug changes the route: it no longer collects the Boots, but goes directly into CAVE after LAKE, using a deathwarp to get up to a high door. Last time , I changed facing in the State structure to x_momentum . This time, I remove x_momentum completely. Since it is possible to lower x_momentum to zero in the air while still moving, you can...

I start this session by enhancing the hud.lua script: I found a way to write the advance_game_tick function using VGA frame advance only, which allowed me to remove the custom interrupt 8 trap code I added to JPC-RR in the previous video . I make the en_pos field show the next enemy spawn position that will be used, not the previous one. Draw boxes around enemies (even if off the playfield), colored to indicate whether the enemy will move on the next tick. I then spend some time experimenting...

Captain Comic game ticks are synchonized with cycles of IRQ 0 (the programmable interval timer), not with VGA refreshes. I add a feature to JPC-RR to trap whenever interrupt 8 is called, which should be equivalent to trapping on each tick of IRQ 0. I add some code to the HUD script to let it advance by one game tick, and a hotkey to call the code at a keypress. I have to add a few hacks to JPC-RR to make the script work reliably. I add a tick counter to the HUD script. The source code is in a...

I adapt a script I had written previously for my Mega Man DOS TAS to find the earliest possible times to press a key to get past the "Press F12 for boot menu" prompt and the game's title sequence by binary search. I spend a ton of time trying to get the script to work using the current version r11.8-rc2 and the newer r11-maint branch, which has a commit whose summary is "Try to fix race condition in restart from...

In this video I install and configure JPC-RR , the emulator that I will use to make the TAS. I experiment with optimizing the system boot sequence and starting the game from the DOS prompt. It seems that unlike in my past Mega Man DOS TAS , the fastest configuration is to skip fdconfig.sys, rather than run it and decline all the options. As a helper for this optimization, I wrote a keybuf.lua script to see when items are removed from the BIOS keyboard buffer. The source code is in a repo that...

This video is mostly devoted to manually filling out the parts of the logic graph that cannot be generated automatically. I also greatly improve the performance of the shortest_winning_path by using a heap to prioritize next states, rather than repeated sorting. The optimization takes the running time down to about 10 seconds, which is still longer than I expected but tolerable. I also add a facing field to the State structure. After filling out the manual parts of the logic, the program...

I start the video by fixing a serious bug in the shortest_winning_path function I wrote last time . It was not choosing the lowest-cost state from the todo in each iteration, only choosing an arbitrary state. Then I make some code improvements: Break ties in path cost by hop count. Implement __eq__ and __hash__ for State , to eliminate external calls to State.tuple . Derive a total ordering for Cost using __lt__ and functools.total_ordering . Make transition_cost take the "how" into...

Continuing in the process of making a tool-assisted speedrun (TAS) for The Adventures of Captain Comic. I implement a shortest-path algorithm over the state space, write a simple cost-inference function for automatically assigning lower bounds to state transitions, and add a way to override the inferences with measured costs. At the end, I go once all the way through the meta-algorithm, making up costs instead of measuring them in an emulator. The algorithm finds a route in the reduced logic...

I get as far as defining a logic graph, a State type, and traversing all the states reachable from the initial state. The source code...

We add some more tests to the exe module. We do a final pass of rustfmt and Clippy. Because of a hardware malfunction, the original audio was badly clipped and nigh unintelligible. The audio in the video is a later re-recording of the voice narration. You won't have the comforting keyboard sounds, but...

This episode is mostly devoted to documentation. We make the web interface handle no-JavaScript and no-WebAssembly cases. We write a man page, a README, and rustdoc for the comicrando and map programs. We also fill out a few metadata fields in Cargo.toml. pkg.zip , wasm-pack output along with an HTML and JavaScript driver The source code is in a repo that uses Git and git-annex . We first revert a logic change made back in episode 27 . You can exit castle0 without picking up the item in forest0. You have to be facing to the right before you open the door, and holding right as you exit. map.svg , updated logic graph map The rest of the episode is devoted to writing rustdoc for all the modules except the main programs, along with some light refactoring and code improvements. Around 00:38 local time the night of June 1–2, near 13th & Grant in Denver, Colorado. The fifth night of George Floyd protests. An incredible boom in the street outside. A woman shrieks from the sidewalk outside the apartment. I missed the beginning but caught this part: "Don't hurt me!" "Please don't shoot me!" "Don't shoot." "Please don't shoot me!" "Please don't shoot me!" "Please don't shoot me!" "Please don't shoot...

We take care of a few small features and bugfixes. Make web permalinks refer to the seed of the generated zip. Let the command-line version run with --seed-seed and no input file, the same as with --seed . Set last-modified dates on files in directory output, just as in zip output. We make some progress on having the command-line version write to a temporary directory/file and delete it if there is a runtime error, but decide that the topic needs to be revisited. pkg.zip , wasm-pack output...

RTA speedrun of The Adventures of Captain Comic , Revision 2 for DOS. This revision has the hover glitch which allows for certain skips that are not possible in later revisions. At this time I am not aware of runs by anyone else in this category. There are three main tricks used in this run. The hover glitch lets you fly for up to 256 ticks if you hold down the jump key while respawning. You must take an intentional death to activate the glitch. It is used twice in this run: Between 2:03 and...

In this episode, we write a custom pseudorandom number generator based on iterated SHA-256, and add a "seed seed" interface to initialize the PRNG for generating seeds. We introduce a new "blinded" format for seeds that makes it harder to infer items locations using mental arithmetic. The core idea is a permutation of integers induced by a the cyclic group of integers modulo n . In our case, n is 1 greater than the number of item assignments and happens to be a prime, so the group of integers modulo n is cyclic and has order equal to the number of item assignments. The group gives us a permutation of integers representing item assignments, one not...

We start by answering a couple of questions left over from last time. The n suffix on a JavaScript numeric literal indicates the BigInt type, which is how wasm-bindgen represents u64 . The technique we arrived at last time to instantiate wasm-pack output is actually documented , but in the wasm-bindgen docs, not the wasm-pack docs. We make it so that non-Wasm compiles don't require the wasm-bindgen crate, and downgrade wasm-bindgen in the Cargo lock file to keep its dependencies working with...

This episode is devoted to getting started with WebAssembly . We start with a brief investigation into how to load a local file in JavaScript, manipulate it, and make the modified file downloadable. After that, we learn how to use wasm-pack to compile a "hello, world" library and call into Rust code from JavaScript. The process doesn't go exactly according to the documentation, but we get something working in the end. Finally we apply wasm-pack to the comicrando library crate, and get...

We do a location-by-location audit of the logic graph. We don't find any serious bugs like the one in the previous episode, and make only a few minor changes. We finally decide not to add in an extra edge in castle2, judging the logic without it to produce seeds that are diverse enough. locs.png , map of locations without edges map.png , revised map graphic valid.pdf , revised comparison of what seeds are valid under both logics winnable_path_length.pdf , revised histogram of shortest winning...
